Week 28: Rule of Thirds

I first heard about the rule of thirds in high school art class, when my teacher told me that all good pieces of art have a third solid black, a third white, and a third grey. Since then, I have discovered that this rule is easily broken because there is so much more than dark and light.

Through photography, I have learned that the “rule” of thirds is about the placement of elements in the frame of the image.

Both sides of this rule are valid. Neither are absolutes.

This week, the challenge is to draw a composition that reflects your interpretation of the rule of thirds. I encourage you to do some research and see what others are saying about the rule of thirds. Look at some artwork and see if the rule of thirds fits.

And remember: have fun!

If you are interested in joining in, even if it is your first time, we’d love to have you join us. Please follow these simple steps to submit in your drawings to be shared!
